Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park is located on the rim of the Gauley River Canyon only minutes from Summersville Lake. This official Civil War Discovery Trail site offers picnicking, four reservable shelters, hiking trails, three overlooks of the Gauley River, softball field, volleyball court, horseshoe pits, and the Patterson House Museum. Reservations can be made by contacting the Superintendent at (304) 872-0825 or carnifexferry@wvdnr.gov.


This is the site of the Sept. 10, 1861 battle in which confederates failed to regain control of the Kanawha Valley. West Virginia's statehood proceeded without serious threat as a result. Near Summersville, W.Va.
