Food, fun and excitement! That’s the Labor Day Weekend Festival in Rowlesburg. When? Aug. 31, 2012 & Sept. 1, 2, 3 & 6, 2012. Things to see and do: Amusements, dances, games, fireman's parade, bike tours, guided tours of Cannon Hill, WWII exhibit, Northern WV Model Train Show that includes the world famous B&O Model Bridge Exhibit of 1927, Railroad Depot Exhibits including the Great Bridge Exhibit, ATV and 4X4 Mud Competition, Monster Truck rides, caboose rides, music all three days in the Park, the classic/antique car show and the famous Ox Roast on Labor Day. In addition there are great things for the kids all three days. Rowlesburg is a great place for families, friends and visitors on Labor Day Weekend!
The Rowlesburg Tourism Commission, Park Commission, Rowlesburg Volunteer Ambulance Service and the Rowlesburg Historical Society offer the Festival each year. All monies collected go to support these non-profit organizations.
The FIREMAN’S PARADE starts at 8 P.M. This is followed by a dance at the Firehouse featuring ”The Road Dawgs” from 10 pm 1 am The big firemen’s parade draws large crowds with bands, fire trucks, Buckwheat Festival Royal Court, floats, railroad trucks, antique cars and many other things. The Park and Firehouse are also open for amusements, music and food.
Rowlesburg lays out the red carpet for kids, families and railfans from the Tri-State area. The town extends a big welcome to visitors young or just young at heart. This is the opening of the Northern West Virginia’s biggest model train show and exhibition. Start at the B&O Depot Museum, the Ambulance Service Function Hall, the Community Building, VFW or the Rowlesburg Park. Everyplace you go in town there will be attractions. Railroaders from Cumberland to Grafton come every year to enjoy the exhibits, grilled chicken dinners in the Park and rides to the top of Cannon Hill. The model train show is a perennial favorite. The model trains are on exhibit Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The B&O Model Bridge Exhibit is open all day on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, along with the famous WWII Exhibit. Both are permanently housed at the Szilagyi Center (High School), thanks to the RRC. The exhibit space is newly refurbished! Loads of fun for the kids, moms, dads and the grandparents!
Grilled chicken is served all day in the Park. This has become a crowd favorite. Be sure to grab some of the delicious open grilled chicken! And, guys and gals bring your 4X4’s and let ‘em rip! The Rowlesburg Volunteer Firemen are sponsoring “Muddin’ on the River” with a big mud bog contest on Saturday from 12:00-2:00 am--registration from 11:00-12:00 am. On Sunday the ATVs will compete in mud and dirt drags. This is a big weekend of events, so come early. Food will be served everyday at the Fire Station and in the Park. In addition to all of the model trains, 4X4s and tournaments, the Rowlesburg Park and Szilagyi Center will be offering many different events: Amusement Park Rides-Cartoon Headquarters, WWII Exhibit and B&O Exhibit, and the 
Capping off the day is the Alumni Dance, featuring “The Classics.” The dance will be held in the auditorium of the Szilagyi Center (Rowlesburg High School). The dance is sponsored by the Rowlesburg Revitalization Committee and is open to the public. For information regarding tickets call Katie Wolfe at 304-454-9232.
This year we are making Sunday Kids Day! Naturally, kids and families are welcome all three days, but this year we will offer opportunities on Sunday for kids to run the model trains; there will be free rides in the caboose! And, the inflatable’s will open in the Park including the bounce house double slide! Bicycle clubs and kayaking clubs also are invited to an outdoor mountain and river festival in Rowlesburg starting at 8:00 am. in the Park. Sunday is for kids and families and old high school friends. The Park will be serving the famous grilled chicken dinners again all day at the Concession Stand in the Park. Sunday also features the popular ATV Mud Bog and Dirt Drags starting at 12 noon at the Firehouse, with registration from 11-12p.m. Monster truck will be rides available at Firehouse and Park. Music in the Park features “Confederate country” and the “Rockin’ Rednecks.”
The Big Labor Day Weekend Celebration is topped off each year with the famous Ox Roast, music and fireworks. The Park will begin serving the Ox Roast beginning at 12:30 pm and going ‘till 9:00 pm. On stage in the Park will be Sam Bulford and the Boys, Keeping the Faith, Tom and Carol Wriston, The Itty Bitty Band and Pure Magic. The Inflatable’s will be back in the Park along with the Bounce House Double Slide and a baseball game. Come and see Ball Blaster, Mickey Fun Play House (5 & under) and the 40’ Obstacle Course. Also bring the kids to meet Spiderman and Hello Kitty. The Monster Truck Rides will be back at the Firehouse and Park.
The roast beef is pit-cooked all night in the Park on a fire of local hardwoods. Secret seasonings added to the meat. The recipe has been handed down for 40 plus years from a former Rowlesburg railroad cook, Rusty Ashburn. The roast beef is served with complete dinners or on sandwiches. Another big feature on Monday is the 50/50 Draw and Ultimate Drawing. These are a smash hit every year and draw hundreds of players. Monday is the traditional antique and classic car show, and things end with a bang at 9:00 pm --the BIG fireworks show against the backdrop of Cannon Hill. This is one of the biggest fireworks shows in Northern West Virginia.
