During an attack by Native Americans on Fort Henry in September 1777, Maj. Samuel MuCulloch, a fearless soldier known for his endeavors against the enemy, became separated from his men. Pursued by hostile adversaries to the summit of a hill, Maj. MuCulloch escaped them by forcing his horse off of the steep slope of Wheeling Hill.
