Backbone and Blackwater
This 158-mile ride takes about four hours and traverses West Virginia’s highlands with a brief foray into Maryland.
From the MountainFest Motorcycle Rally site in Morgantown, make a left and head east on CR 19/24 Osage Road. At I-79 entrance 155 (CR 24 exit), turn right and head south on I-79 for 6 miles. Then bear left (east) onto I-68. At I-68 exit 4, turn right (south) onto W.Va. 7 (CR 92). Follow W.Va. 7 southeast through Masontown, Kingwood (home of the Preston County Buckwheat Festival) and Terra Alta. After 45 miles you will enter Maryland. Continue east on Md. 39 Hutton Road to U.S. 219. You will travel about 23 miles through Maryland before crossing over Backbone Mountain (Maryland’s highest point at 3,360 feet) and re-entering West Virginia and the Monongahela National Forest. Stay on U.S. 219 West (Seneca Trail) through Thomas, traveling along the scenic North Fork of the Blackwater River for 12 miles, then make a right (north) onto W.Va. 72 Chestnut Street. Stay on W.Va. 72 for 13 miles, and then turn left onto U.S. 50 West, traveling 21 miles to U.S. 119. In Grafton, make a right onto U.S. 119 North (Victory Avenue). Travel 22 miles back to Morgantown, then continue north on U.S. 19 (W.Va. 7) and make a left (south) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road back to MountainFest.
Briery Mountain Circle
This 147-mile trip through Monongalia and Preston counties to Seneca Rocks dips into Maryland and takes three hours and 14 minutes to complete. If you have time, visit the ancient hemlock forest of Cathedral State Park or enjoy the Cheat River Gorge overlook at Coopers Rock State Forest.
From Mountainfest in Morgantown, turn left onto CR 19/24 Osage Road and travel about 1 mile. At I-79 entrance 155/CR 24 exit, turn right (south) onto I-79 and travel 22 miles. Take I-79 exit 132 and bear left (south) onto U.S. 250/W.Va. 73. After 10 miles, bear left (east) onto U.S. 50/U.S. 250, then bear right (south) onto U.S. 250. Bear right (south) onto U.S. 119/U.S. 25. After 12 miles, turn left (east) onto U.S. 250 (North Main Street) and travel 19 miles. Bear left (east) onto U.S. 33/U.S. 250 and stay on that road for about 42 miles. Then turn right (south) onto local roads to Seneca Rocks.
After your Seneca Rocks stop, return north on local roads. Turn left (west) onto U.S. 33/W.Va. 55 and travel 12 miles. Continue west on W.Va. 32. Stay on W.Va. 32 through Harman, traveling 18 miles. Bear left (west) onto W.Va. 32 William Avenue. Stay on W.Va. 32 and bear right (north) onto Davis Road. Continue north on W.Va. 32 onto Spruce Street, then north on U.S. 219. Stay on U.S. 219 north for 21 miles until you enter Maryland. Continue west on Md. 39 (East Oak Street and then Hutton Road). Travel Md. 39/Hutton Road for 5 miles, entering West Virginia.
Continue west on W.Va. 7 through Terra Alta (Oakland Street, East State Avenue, West State Avenue, East Main Street, West Main Street, Morgantown Street). Stay on W.Va. 7 through Kingwood (Kingwood Avenue, Tunnelton Street, South Main Street, Main Street) and through Reedsville. Bear right (north) onto W.Va. 7/CR 92. Make a left (southwest) onto I-68 entrance ramp 4 and travel 4 miles. At exit 148, turn left (south) onto I-79 and travel 16 miles to Exit 132. Bear left (south) onto U.S. 250 (W.Va. 73). Return west on U.S. 250 Fairmont Avenue. Bear right onto I-79 entrance 132 and travel 22 miles. At I-79 Exit 155/CR 24 exit, turn left (west) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road, then turn right onto local roads back to Mountainfest.
Cranberry Summit
This 133-mile ride through Monongalia and Preston counties can be completed in four hours. For an added treat, Stop at Coopers Rock State Forest off I-68 to enjoy breathtaking views of the Cheat River Canyon.
From Mountainfest in Morgantown, turn left (east) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road and proceed for 1.5 miles. Turn right (east) onto U.S. 19 (W.Va. 7) and travel 3.6 miles. Continue south for two miles on U.S. 119 University Avenue, and then continue south on W.Va. 73. Stay on W.Va. 73 for seven miles, then bear left (south) onto CR 87. Stay on CR 87 (Halleck Road) for 6 miles, then bear left (north) onto CR 83 Smith Road for 1.8 mile. Travel east on CR 119/13 Gladesville Road for about a mile, then continue on CR 33 for 1.7 mile. Turn left (northeast) onto CR 29 Flat and travel 3.3 miles.
Continue east on CR 92/4 Sacks Run. At CR 92/4 Reedsville, return northwest on the same road. Turn left (west) onto W.Va. 92 and proceed for 12 miles, after which W.Va. 92 merges with U.S. 50. Travel U.S. 50 for 9.8 miles, then bear left (north) onto CR 53 Aurora Pike for 4.3 miles. Bear right (east) onto CR 55 Old Factor, then bear left onto First Street. Bear left onto W.Va. 7 (Oakland Street, East State Avenue then West State Avenue). Bear right (north) onto Brandonville Turnpike (CR 3). Travel CR 3 Brandonville Turnpike for 17 miles. Turn left (west) onto W.Va. 26 Morgantown Street, which will merge with CR 73/3 after 1.2 miles. Turn right (south) onto W.Va. 26, then turn right (west) onto I-68 and travel 12.6 miles. At I-68 exit 10, turn right (north-east) onto CR 69/6. Bear right (northeast) onto CR 857. Bear right (south-east) onto Delta Road 26 (Rishel). Bear right (south) onto CR 69 Quarry Run for 1.4 miles and then continue east on CR 73/73 for 1.9 miles. Turn right (south) onto local roads.
At I-68 Morgantown, return north on local roads. Turn left (west) onto CR 73/73 and travel 1.9 miles. Continue west on CR 69-5; turn left onto CR 69/5 Quarry Run and travel 1.4 miles. Bear left (north-west) onto Delta Road 26 (Rishel). Bear left (west) onto CR 857 and travel 0.3 miles. Bear left (south) onto CR 69/6 (U.S. 48 Access Road) and travel 0.2 miles. Bear right (west) onto I-68 entrance 10 (CR 6 exit) and travel 10.2 miles. At I-68 exit 148, bear right (north) onto I-79 and travel 6 miles. At I-79 exit 155, turn left (west) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road. Turn right (north) onto local roads back to Mountainfest.
Iron Snake Valley
This 144-mile, four-hour ride runs through Monongalia, Marion, Harrison and Wetzel counties. If you have time to kill, stop to enjoy nature at Lewis Wetzel Wildlife Management Area, off W.Va. 7 at Jacksonburg.
From Mountainfest Motorcycle Rally in Morgantown, turn left (east) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road and travel 1 mile. Turn right onto I-79 and travel 2.5 miles to exit 152. Bear right (south) onto U.S. 19. Travel U.S. 19 for 31 miles, through Shinnston, and then turn right (west) onto W.Va. 20. Bear right (southwest) onto W.Va. 20 Depot Street, then left on W.Va 20 Main Street. Continue traveling W.Va. 20, through Smithfield, for the next 43 miles. Then turn right (east) onto W.Va. 7. Follow W.Va. 7 for the next 60 miles, turning right (south) onto W.Va. 7/U.S. 250. W.Va. 7 will merge with CR 52/1, CR 54, W.Va. 218, CR 52/1, Wise Road and U.S. 19. Turn right (south) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road. Turn right (north) onto local roads back to Mountainfest.
Paw Paw Canyon
This 53-mile loop through Monongalia and Marion counties takes an hour and a half to complete.
From Mountainfest Motorcycle Rally in Morgantown, turn left (east) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road. Then turn left (west) onto U.S. 19/W.Va. 7. Continue north on W.Va. 7 Wise Road, then bear right (northwest) onto W.Va. 7/CR (52/1). After 5 miles, bear left (south) onto W.Va. 218 Guston Run Road. After 6.8 miles, bear right (south) onto W.Va. 218. After 3 miles, bear left (east) onto W.Va. 218 Washington Street. Then bear left (south) onto W.Va. 218/CR 17. Bear left (east) onto CR 17. Stay on CR 17 for the next 7 or 8 miles; CR 17 will merge with Main Avenue, Water Street and Rivesville, Monongalia County. Bear left (east) onto U.S. 19 Main Street/First Street. Stay on U.S. 19 for 12 miles, then bear left onto I-79 entrance 152. At I-79 exit 155/24 exit, turn left (west) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road. Turn right onto local roads back to Mountainfest.
Washington's Road
This figure-eight is 128 miles long and takes a little over three hours to complete. If you can spare some extra time, take a detour to Coopers Rock State Forest, 13 miles east of Morgantown. The forest features a breathtaking overlook of the Cheat River Gorge. Its rustic picnic shelters, built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, are on the National Register of Historic Places.
From Mountainfest Motor Rally in Morgantown, turn left (east) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road. At CR 24 exit, turn right (south) onto I-79. Take I-79 exit 152 and turn left (north) onto U.S. 19 Fairmont Road. After two miles, bear left (east) onto U.S. 119/W.Va. 7 and travel 7 miles. Bear left (west) onto local roads. At U.S. 119, return east on local roads.
Turn left (north) onto U.S. 119 and travel 13 miles, entering Pennsylvania. Turn right (south-east) on Kissinger Road. At Pa. 43 Kissinger Road exit, turn left (north) onto Pa. 43. At U.S. 119/Pa. 43 exit, continue north on U.S. 119 Uniontown Bypass. Stay on this road for 14 miles, then turn right (east) onto Pa. 201 West Crawford Avenue. Bear left (east) onto Pa. 711 West Crawford Avenue and bear left again on Pa. 711 East Crawford Avenue. Then bear right (east) onto Pa. 711 Snyder Street. Bear right (south-east) onto Pa. 711 Springfield Pike and continue east for about three miles.
Stay on Pa. 711 through Normalville for 4 miles, then bear right (south) onto Pa. 381 Mill Run Road. Stay on Mill Run for about 5 miles, then bear right (south-west) onto Pa. 381 Commercial Street, continuing south on Pa. 318 Water Street and Mill Run Road for the next 4 miles. Stay on Pa. 318 through Farmington, Pa., then turn right (west) onto U.S. 40/Pa. 381. Remain on U.S. 40 National Pike for another 9 miles, through Hopwood. Turn right (north) onto Pa. 51 Morgantown Road. At Pa. 51 Uniontown, Pa., return south-west on Pa. 51 Morgantown Road. Turn right (west) onto U.S. 40 West Fayette Street. Then bear left (west) onto Pa. 21 McClellandtown Road. At U.S. 119/Pa. 21 exit, continue west on Pa. 21 McClellandtown Road. Bear right (west) onto Pa. 21 McClellandtown. Remain on 21 through, Uniontown, for about 21 miles. Turn (south-east) onto I-79 entrance 3.
Remain on I-79, crossing back into West Virginia. At I-79 Exit 155/24 exit turn right (west) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road. Turn right (north) onto local roads back to Mountainfest.
Sawyer's Full-Day Wander
This meandering, 214-mile ride traverses through Monongalia and Preston counties, over Backbone Mountain into Maryland, and back into West Virginia via Grant and Tucker counties. Plan a stop at Cathedral State Park in Preston County. Cathedral is one of the last living commemorations of the vast virgin hemlock forest which once flourished in the Appalachian highlands. The route takes about six hours to complete.

At W.Va. 24 Aurora, stay on W.Va. south for 5 miles. Turn right (south-west) onto U.S. 219 and proceed nine miles. Continue south on W.Va. 32 for about 15 miles, then bear right (west) onto W.Va. 72. Stay on W.Va. 72 (Davis) for 16.5 miles, then turn right (south-east) onto U.S. 219 (Hambleton) and travel 12.6 miles. Bear right onto W.Va. 90 (Thomas) and travel 10.5 miles. Nearby attractions include Coopers Rock State Forest and Tygart Lake State Park, and the route also passes through two historic towns: Grafton (the birthplace of Mother’s Day) and Phillipi (home of the famous covered bridge). The trip takes three hours and 40 minutes to complete.

The Hundred Triangle
This 85-mile route through Monongalia, Wetzel and Marion counties takes two-and-a-half hours to complete.
From Mountainfest Motorcycle Rally, turn left (east) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road. At I-79 entrance 155/24 exit, turn left (north) onto I-79 and travel seven miles, entering Pennsylvania. At I-79 exit 1, turn left (west) onto Ellsworth Avenue. Turn right (west) onto U.S. 19 Henflint Road, and stay on that road for 16 miles. Continue west on Pa. 21 West High Street/Main Street. Bear right (west) onto Pa. 18/21 and travel six miles to Rogersville. At Pa. 21 Rogersville, stay on Pa. 18/21 west.
Continue west on Pa. 18 for the next 15 miles, entering West Virginia. Continue south on W.Va. 69 to Hundred. At Hundred, stay on W.Va. 69 south. Continue west on W.Va. 69 Pennsylvania Avenue. Turn left (south) onto U.S. 250 Main Street. Turn left (northeast) onto W.Va. 7 and stay on that road through Burton. Twelve miles past Burton, continue east on W.Va. 7 (CR 52/1). Continue east on W.Va. 7 (CR 54) and bear right (east) onto W.Va. 7/218. Bear left (east) onto W.Va. 7 (CR 52/1) and travel 6 miles. Turn right (east) onto W.Va. 7 Wise Road. Wildwater Passage
This 81.5-mile route makes for roughly a two-and-a-half hour jaunt through Preston, Taylor, Marion and Monongalia counties. The route takes you in the vicinity of Prickett’s Fort, Valley Falls and Tygart Lake state parks as well as through the historic city of Grafton, the birthplace of Mother’s Day.
From Mountainfest Motorcycle Rally in Morgantown, turn left (east) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road and travel 1.5 miles. Turn right (east) onto U.S. 19/W.Va. 7 and travel 3.6 miles. Continue south 2.2 miles on U.S. 119 University Avenue. Continue south on W.Va. 73 for 15.3 miles. Bear left (south) onto W.Va. 310 (CR 3/1). Stay on W.Va. 310, through Fairmont, for 11.5 miles. Bear left (south) onto CR 5/7 and then turn left (east) onto W.Va. 310 (CR 3/1). Turn right (south) on W.Va. 310 Main Street, then bear left onto U.S. 50 West Main Street. At Grafton, stay on U.S. 50 for 12.2 miles. Turn left (north) onto W.Va. 92 and travel 14.7 miles. Bear left onto Kingwood Pike (CR 27) and travel 4 miles. Old Kingwood Pike turns into CR 81; continue north on CR 81 for 9.5 miles. Bear right (north) onto U.S. 119 University Avenue and travel 0.5 mile. Continue north on U.S. 19/W.Va. 7 for 3.6 miles. Turn left (south) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road. Turn right (north) onto local roads back to Mountainfest.
Races to the Broken Ridge
This 253-mile loop takes five-and-a-half hours to complete. If you have time to spare, you might want to plan several stops along your route: Philippi’s famous two-lane covered bridge is the only one of its kind in the federal highway system. This historic town also is the site of the Civil War’s first land battle, which is commemorated in the annual “Blue and Gray” historical re-enactment.
Picturesque Elkins serves as headquarters to the Monongahela National Forest and is home to Davis and Elkins College, the Mountain State Forest Festival and the Augusta Heritage Festival. Pull over and watch climbers ascend Seneca Rocks, or hike the 1.5-mile trail to the top of the rocks and enjoy the beautiful vistas. While in Thomas, grab a sandwich and coffee or take in a musical act at the Purple Fiddle. Then check out the goods at the MountainMade Artisan Gallery and Country Store. Blackwater Falls State Park, just three miles south of Thomas, is a great location for scenic photos, picnics or just stretching your legs.

Northwest Corridor
This 122-mile loop takes about three hours to complete and takes you through Monongalia, Marion, Wetzel and Marshall counties.
From Mountainfest Motorcycle Rally, turn left (east) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road. Turn right (east) onto U.S. 19/W.Va. 7. Stay on U.S. 19 for through Laurel Point. Fifteen miles past Laurel Point, continue north on U.S. 250 Cleveland Avenue. Travel U.S. 259 for 49 miles, then continue east on W.Va. 891. Continue north on W.Va. 891 Wharton Run, entering Pennsylvania. Continue east on Pa. 21 for 16 miles. Continue southeast on Pa. 18/21 for 6 miles. Bear left (east) onto Pa. 21 Main Street, then High Street, then West High Street. Continue east on U.S. 19/Pa. 21 for the next 23 miles, entering West Virginia. Turn right (south) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road. Turn right (north) onto local roads back to Mountainfest.
Follow the Greenbrier
This 170-mile figure-eight loop takes about four hours and 40 minutes to complete. The route runs through the scenic Monongahela National Forest and through the historically significant cities of Philippi and Grafton.
Philippi is the site of the Civil War’s first land battle, which is commemorated in the annual “Blue and Gray” historical re-enactment. Its famous covered bridge is the only two-lane covered bridge in the federal highway system. The city of Grafton is known as the birthplace of Mother’s Day; Anna Jarvis, who founded the holiday, was born Grafton on May 1, 1864. Today the wooden, two-story structure has been converted into a museum depicting life in the 19th century.
Beginning at the MountainFest Motorcycle Rally in Morgantown, turn left (east) onto CR 19/24 Osage Road. Then make a right (east) onto U.S. 19/W.Va. 7. Continue south on U.S. 119 University Avenue, then bear left onto CR-81 Dorsey Lane until it merges with Kingwood Pike (CR 81/27) in Morgantown. Bear right (north-west) onto U.S. 33/250 for 7 miles; the road merges into U.S. 250/W.Va. 92. Stay on U.S. 250/W.Va. 92 for 6. 5 miles, then bear right onto W.Va. 92 Morgantown Pike.
Continue north on W.Va. 92 (C.R. 92/25) for about 10 miles, then bear left (north-west) onto W.Va. 38. Stay on W.Va. 38 for 5.5 miles, then bear right (north-west) onto U.S. 250 Junior-Phillipi-Grafton Road. Travel 3.3 miles and then turn right (north) onto U.S. 119/250. Stay on U.S. 119 for 40 miles, then continue north on U.S. 19/W.Va. 7 for 3.6 miles. Turn left (south) onto C.R. 19/24 Osage Road, then make a right (north) onto local roads back to Moutainfest.
