Swiss and German settlers arrived in West Virginia in 1869 and founded the town of Helvetia high in the mountains of Randolph County. Due to the isolation of the area, the traditions of dance, music, food and holidays have survived through the generations.

Today, the hamlet is a popular tourist destination, with the celebration of events such as Fasnacht (the pre-Lenten burning of Old Man Winter), the Feast of Sankt Nicholaus, the Swiss National Holiday and the Helvetia Fair. Businesses include the Hutte Restaurant, Beekeeper Bed and Breakfast, Cheese Haus and the General Store.
