Four seasons of fun

Road biking in West VirginiaFour seasons just doesn't seem like enough when it comes to exploring the outdoors in West Virginia. Cool summers, temperate falls, flower-filled springs and snow-kissed winters offer stunning backdrops on which the most vigorous or relaxing outdoor adventures can be played out.

Known for challenging terrain and mountainous views, West Virginia was named the top mountain biking state in the country by the International Mountain Bike Association in 2004. For milder rides, enjoy pedaling along winding "Country Roads" or on one of the state's popular rail-trails.

From a small section of the famed Appalachian Trail to thousands of miles of trails in national and state parks and more, West Virginia is a special place to take a hike. Or, if walking along a stream casting for trout or in the woods watching wildlife are more your style, we offer both in abundance. Those who'd rather have two feet on either side of a horse, riding is a popular pursuit on countless trails and at some parks and campgrounds.

Winter snow melt fuels about 30,000 miles of rivers and streams and fills more than 125 lakes to the brim. While West Virginia is known for its world-class whitewater rivers, there are many waterways better suited for canoeing and floating trips taken at a more leisurely pace. And then there are lakes, where boaters cruise the waters in everything from houseboats and pontoons to canoes, kayaks, personal watercraft and motorboats.
