Fly Rod Chronicles Features Pipestem State Park

West Virginia Travel Journal

Pipestem, W.Va. -- Curtis Fleming, host of “Fly Rod Chronicles” on the Outdoor Channel, filmed in several West Virginia locations in 2012 for episodes to be shown in 2013. One episode showcases the fly-fishing package opportunities at Pipestem Resort State Park.

“Several years ago Pipestem, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Pipestem Resort, and WVU and Concord universities worked cooperatively to develop a fly-fishing experience in a remote area of West Virginia as part of a 2007 marketing strategy,” said Ed Wooton, outdoor specialist at Pipestem Resort. “The goal was to promote the Mountain State as destination fishing.”

The Trout Wrangler package at Pipestem serves to create more interest in fishing and to emphasize outdoor recreation at state parks. The package also courts fishing license sales and the potential of a returning angler to other streams in the Mountain State. Pipestem’s close proximity to Bluestone State Park and Bluestone Wildlife Management Area provides more fishing opportunities year-round.  Bluestone State Park features camping and cabins, the wildlife management area has 330 campsites more rustic in nature, and Pipestem offers lodges, cabins, and campground.

Bluestone Lake has the state striped bass record for both length, 47.16 inches, and weight, 45.70 pounds. Both record fish were caught in Bluestone Lake waters by James Brooks in 2010.  Information about fishing in West Virginia, including stocking, state records, sport fishing posters, online license sales and other fishing topics is online at www.wvdnr.gov.

Wooton is the contact at Pipestem Resort for Trout Wrangler overnight and fly-fishing packages. Trout Wrangler includes horseback ride access, overnight accommodation, four meals and guide services as necessary. It is a catch-and-release package. Reservations for March 30 through May 17, 2013, are available.

The Pipestem episode of “Fly Rod Chronicles” first aired on the Outdoor Channel Jan. 1.  Additional airings are scheduled for Tuesday, February 19, at 11 a.m., Friday, February 22, at 12 p.m., and Saturday, February 23, at 6:30 p.m. EST
