West Virginia Tourism Awards Programs



The nomination period for the Stars of the Industry awards has closed.  Many thanks to the West Virginians who nominated a dedicated, energetic, enthusiastic and hardworking individual or organization that has helped make the tourism industry a top performer.  Please stay tuned for more information on the award winners.

Advertising/Public Relations categories include:

Overall Advertising Campaign
This award is presented to the organization with the most creative advertising campaign—including print, radio, television and web. 

Overall Marketing Campaign
This award is presented to the organization with the most creative marketing strategy. 

Print Article
This award is presented to the writer of a print article or editorial—not to include advertorial material provided through cooperative advertising projects/special sections. 

Print Photography Layout
This award is presented to the publication with the best print/photography layout—not to include advertorial material provided through cooperative advertising projects/special sections. 

Internet/E-Magazine Article
This award is presented to the writer of an unpaid article published on the Internet. 

Broadcast
This award is presented to the broadcaster with the best television or radio coverage—including news and documentaries. 

Website
This award is presented to the organization whose website includes creative content, captivating imagery and innovative online features.

Social Media
This award is presented to the organization that employs social media across multiple platforms as a key component of its marketing strategy.

Industry Recognition categories include:

The Spirit of West Virginia Award
This award is presented to a community or organization that has promoted West Virginia tourism development and enhanced community spirit while preserving the state’s cultural, historical or natural heritage and beauty.  Emphasis is given to volunteer and community efforts.

The Mountain State Award
This award recognizes an event or facility that stands above the rest in excellence in programming (types and number of activities for tourists) quality, distinctiveness, marketing efforts and/or attendance and impact on the state’s economy and/or image.

West Virginia Community Tourism Development Award
This award is presented to a community or organization that has enhanced its local resources through multi-business cooperatives, creative and innovative development efforts.  Emphasis is given to business-oriented development.

West Virginia Tourism Professional of the Year
This is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding and significant contribution to West Virginia’s tourism industry, through exceptional job performance, leadership in the industry or development and improvement of tourism facilities and activities.  While the panel is encouraged to consider career contributions, emphasis will be placed on contributions during the past year.

West Virginia Tourism Oshel Craigo Lifetime Achievement Award
This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated continued leadership for a significant period of time or substantial contributions to the growth and success of West Virginia’s tourism industry.  This individual is considered the “best of the best” in the industry.  Note: this award is not awarded every year.

A seven (7) member industry panel will judge the entries.  Winners will be announced at the 2014 West Virginia Governor’s Conference on Tourism Awards Dinner at the Charleston Marriott Town Center, Tuesday, September 23.
