Each year, the West Virginia Division of Tourism salutes our brightest industry leaders and the best tourism and travel media features through our awards programs, Stars of the Industry.

Advertising/Public Relations



Best Overall Advertising Campaign

Magazine, Newspaper, Photography, radio, television and web that uses the most imaginative and innovative advertising to promote the tourism industry.

Winner: Southern WV CVB


Best Overall Marketing Campaign
This award will be presented to the organization that uses the most imaginative and innovative marketing.

Winner: Greenbrier County CVB


Best Print Article
Editorial coverage is unpaid media coverage, which does not include advertorial material provided through cooperative advertising projects and special sections.

Winner: The Greenbrier: New York Times


Best Print Photography Layout
Photographic content that does not include advertorial material provided through cooperative advertising projects and special sections.

Winner: The Greenbrier New York Times


Best Internet/E-Magazine article
An unpaid article that is published on the Internet. Application should include website’s address on which the article appeared and data supporting its popularity, such as number of hits, unique visitors, etc.

Winner: Yeager Airport


Best Broadcast
(Radio or TV coverage) Application should include information on the program’s broadcast area and viewer/listener demographics. Includes, news, or documentary.

Winner: Curtis Flemming Fly Rod Chronicles


Best Website
A website which best promotes that tourism entity which has applied with the use of creative content, captivating imagery and innovative online features. Include website’s address and data supporting its popularity, such as number of hits, unique visitors, etc.

Winner: Southern WV CVB



Tourism Recognition



The Spirit of West Virginia Award
This award is presented to a community or organization that has promoted West Virginia tourism development and enhanced community pride while preserving the state’s cultural, historical or natural heritage and beauty. Emphasis is given to volunteer and community efforts.

Winner: WV Association of Counties – Court House Project

The Mountain State Award

Recognizes the event or facility that stands above the rest in excellence in programming (types and number of activities for tourists) quality, distinctiveness, marketing efforts and/or attendance and impact on the state’s economy and/or image.

Winner: Café Cimino

West Virginia Community Tourism Development Award

This award is presented to a community or organization that has enhanced its local resources through multi-business cooperatives, imaginative and innovative development efforts. Emphasis is given to business-oriented development.

Winner: American Mountain Theater

West Virginia Tourism Professional of the Year

This award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding and significant contribution that enriches West Virginia’s tourism industry, through outstanding job performance, leadership in the tourism industry or development and improvement of tourism facilities and activities. While the judges are encouraged to consider career contributions, the emphasis of this award applies to contributions during this award period.

Winner: Tim and Melody Urbanic

West Virginia Tourism Oshel Craigo Lifetime Achievement Award

The best of the best in West Virginia’s tourism industry. Persons nominated for this award must have demonstrated continued and long term leadership, benevolence or contributions to the growth and success of the entire state’s tourism industry. This person is the epitome of the state’s success. Not awarded every year.
