Come Home to WV Essays

Come Home Spokesperson Contest
Growing up in Brooke County, I could not wait to get out of West Virginia. After leaving, I could not WAIT to get back. I discovered a yearning for my hills that would not go away. Coming back has given me an opportunity to know that my life has made a difference. I had opportunities in business and working as a volunteer with City, State and rail-trails. West Virginia is where you can go back in time, build the future or blend them. It is your choice with beautiful scenery as a bonus. I came HOME!

My wife and I moved back to WV in 1990. A year later we had our first child; so, she, too, is a native West Virginian. I wrote a song called "Come Home" about people realizing how great it is to live in this area. It was turned into a high-quality recording and is now used as a theme song for the TV station where I work. West Virginia needs more people in their 20s and 30s to "Come Home" and raise their families and give back to the state which has given so much to them.

We love West Virginia. We love the mountains and the beautiful leaves in the fall. We love to travel the state especially Cass Scenic Railroad and walking down to the bottom of the New River Gorge. We love going to Marshll games and watching WVU play basketball. We love seeing the West Virginia signs as we drive back from trips to see our family. Most of all we love that we can grow up in a place with friends and family that will make us better people when we grow up. Like the state we are wild and wonderful, too.

Imagine a place where you can spend summers splashing in lakes and rafting Americas oldest river. Picture the rainbow of mountains in the fall and a winter filled with snow and holiday fun. This is the place that I call home this is West Virginia. I am proud to raise my children here and teach them the rich history this beautiful place has to offer. The memories of traveling the state with my family are some of the best in my life. I would like to encourage all West Virginians to come home and experience the majesty and adventure.

Sarah Kirk I can't enter this competition since I have moved to IL. I just wanted to say that I return to WV once a month because I chose to stay in the WV Army National Guard. Every time I am driving in and I see that Welcome to WV sign I can't contain my excitement. There is no place in this country that is more beautiful or has kinder people then right here in West Virginia. I do plan to return as soon as my fiance returns from the war.
~Sarah Kirk, Dixon, IL

Sarah was born in 1986 in Seoul, South Korea. She was adopted as an infant and moved to Grafton, West Virginia where she lived most of her life until moving to Morgantown. Sarah works especially on the local level to improve our state and region. She loves living in West Virginia and always speaks highly of it to friends and family, arguing that there is no better place on Earth to live. I feel Sarah being young, intelligent, beautiful and from a diverse background makes the type of spokeswoman needed to change WV's image with the country.
~ Thomas Bias, Morgantown, WV
(Nominates: Sarah Bias, wife)

My mom has been modeling and acting since before I was born. She does everything she can to support me and my two brothers. That includes being gone for long periods at a time. I just want her to come home to West Virginia and remember what its like to call this state HOME. The picture I'm sending is of me and my mom when she came in for my cheerleading competition. I got hit in the eye with her hat. lol.

Jennifer Brown More jobs in West Virginia! In 2004 I moved to NC after finding that the company I was working for was going to merge and I could lose my job. My sister lured me down there thinking there was greater wealth and prosperity waiting for me in NC. After two years I realized that I was better off in WV. People say there are more jobs down south, but what they don't tell you is there's more competition for those jobs and that the cost of living was two times more than our great state. There's no place like home!
~ Jennifer Brown, St. Albans, WV
(Nominates: self)

I was born and raised in Charleston, graduated from Capital High School and graduated from WV State University, while living at home. After college, I moved, like so many of us young people. Six years later, I yearned for the mountains and the familiarity that Charleston and my parents' home brought me, so I came back. It took me a while to find employment, but I'm working full time, getting involved in the community and and happier than ever.

Melissa Lampert When my daughter Melissa was nine, my husband's job transferred us from Elkview, WV, to Orlando, FL. WV was always "home". As soon as she graduated from college in 1993, she began a big publishing career in Boston, Ma. WV was STILL home. At 35 years old, she looked at her husband one morning and said, "I want peace simplicity & beauty." He came home from work that afternoon & said, "We're moving to WV." Six months ago they moved to Lewisburg & feel like they are finally HOME! Now she spends her time trying to get us to move back home!
~ Lois Fields, Orlando, FL
(Nominates: Melissa Lampert, daughter)

My son was born in WV and has lived here his entire life. He attended at WV college and currently works with the school systems in WV as a yearbook specialist with Herff Jones. Joshua loves the state of WV and has worked on several local and state-wide political campaigns. Joshua aspires to someday become the Governor of the great state.

Jason Barr To live in WV is an honor and privilege. I work outdoors, all around our beautiful state. I've enjoyed the warm hospitality of many fellow statesmen from every region. The beauty of WV is not only in our mountains, trees, valleys and wildlife; but in the spirit in which Appalachian people provide for their families, serve their country and live their culture. Life is simple, peaceful and quiet. Our mountains, once isolated our culture, helping us remain true to our raising. They still protect us from devestating storms, guide our rivers, and most of all, hold and protect our future.
~ Jason Milan Barr, Evans, WV

For my brother, being back in West Virginia is about sitting on our parents' porch, spending a Saturday at a gold and blue football game, waving to someone and having them wave back. He spent years doing what he thought he wanted to do -- making good money teaching near Richmond, Virginia. But what we think we want is often not what we need. My brother needs to be on the ground where he grew up, run the roads he did as a teenager, teach those who may not have it all. West Virginia is better because he came home.

When you see the weather dancing on the ridge, you know you are home in West Virginia. West Virginia where making a living is living indeed. You'll be in the place where the kid next door knows your name, and racing off to work, he invites you to play catch. In West Virginia "Rush hour" passes in a flash, and you'll be home. Home where the twilight lingers long, and the kid next door -- who knows your name -- gives you a second chance. West Virginia, that place where you can retire and live life to the fullest. West Virginia, come home where you belong.
~ Mary Bower, Mt. Hope, WV

In Feb. 2005, the WV Grantmakers Association proudly helped Shannon Cunningham "come home" from Nashville, TN, to be our first paid staff. Shannon is intelligent, vivacious and professional. Shannon would say, "I came home to West Virginia because West Virginia is where my heart is, where my family is, and where I know that my skills can make a real impact. There are good people in communities across West Virginia who work hard and care deeply about each other. I want to be a part of the great things happening there -- West Virginia needs me, and I need it."

Tim Morgan Who knows why people should "Come Home to WV" better than my husband? No one! A Talcott native, he left after college for a first career as a Navy officer. After traveling all over the world he settled down here in the place where he belongs, where he now has a successful career as a defense contractor. He successfully recruits employees for his high-tech employer and it's so easy for him, because of his absolute love of our State, its people and its majestic beauty! He is so happy to be "home" and his smile shows it (see picture)!
~ Shawn Morgan, Bridgeport, WV
(Nominates: Tim Morgan, husband)
My husband and I, like many others, had to leave the state to expand our portfolios. For 13 years we longed to return to WV, but were concerned about finding work. While we were expanding our portfolios, West Virginia was expanding, too -- international companies, growth of small businesses, national chain stores and restaurants, recreational areas, and more. For three years now we have been happily raising our family and growing a small business. Opportunities await -- come Home!

For me West Virginia is my home and will always be my home. I Love going to the beach but I always look forward to seeing those mountains and know that I am Home. My ancestors all lived here and my roots are deep into the soil of West Virgina -- from Clay County all the way to Logan County. I love my State and I could never imagine living anywhere else. These Country Roads take me to the place I wanna be --West Virginia, My Home.
