Come Home to WV Essays

Why come home to West Virginia? Because it is paradise! While I have not traveled vast distances to other places, I have lived in the beautiful state all my life. There is nowhere else that you can smell the fresh air after a spring rain, bask in the summer sun on a lake, view the leaves changing beautifully all over the state and spend a day playing in the snow, for hours on end. West Virginia for all the years I have lived here truly has and will, I am sure, continue to be a true Heaven on Earth.

Living and being in West Virginia means connections to my friends and family. I've found these things are more important than anything else. After graduating from West Virginia Wesleyan in 2003, I was eager obtain my first "real" job and I didn't care where it was. I taught for a year in Virginia and moved home singing a very different tune. I crossed back into West Virginia singing "Country Roads" at the top of my lungs. I moved back in 2004 and began teaching at my alma mater, Ripley High School. Being home is more precious than money or fame.

Since Dr. Hartz returned to WV, she experienced many personal tragedies, but she also opened her home to many people who needed shelter, especially before places for homeless teens and those in trouble existed. She has promoted WV all her life, as well as the work of WV people. Her credentials include appearances on every national news network in the US, having her own TV program in the 1980s, and promoting her books, as well as others. Kara is a native of Greenbrier County, West Virginia who had moved away to pursue her career in tourism in the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg TN area, but was always a WV girl at heart. In February of 2007, she "came home" to WV after accepting the position of Executive Director of the Greenbrier County Convention & Visitors Bureau. Kara is a wonderful representative of Greenbrier County and the State of West Virginia who strives hard every day to promote our area and our State as a premier tourism destination and I believe she would make an excellent spokesperson.

Stephanie Conrad Shortly after our wedding my husband and I moved just north of Charlotte, NC. We took a weekend to come back home for a Mountaineer football game. We won, and it was all I could do not to cry as the entire stadium sang "Country Roads." My homesickness enveloped me and I knew what we had to do. Within three months, John and I were back home in West Virginia. The people of West Virginia are what make West Virginia. There is opportunity here and it has blossomed from the determination, generosity, trust, warmth and ingenuity of our West Virginia friends and neighbors.

My sister, Lori McKinney said West Virginia is a blank canvas, paint it anyway you like and thats what shes doing! Growing up we had limited access to the arts. We left WV to broaden our creative horizons. After college abroad, Lori returned home. She opened Riff Raff Arts Collective/Llynium Entertainment and established Culturefest, a world music/arts festival. She convinced me to move my music school home and enticed an entrepreneur to open an internet café/coffee shop. With Lori at the helm of Create Mercer County, we are building a thriving arts community in Princeton with 15 artists in residence.

As a native West Virginian who had to leave my home 20 years ago I would like to nominate Mark Bowe for the "Come Home to WV" spokesman. Mark IS WV in its best attributes, honest, resourceful and kind. When I see Mark's smile, he puts me to mind of what I miss most about my home, front porches, friendly faces and fun. As a small business owner, he was fortunate to get to choose to live and work wherever he wanted. There was no other choice for Mark. WV is the place to be for a true modern.

Dvon Duncan I would like to tell you alittle about my sister and why I think she would make a wonderful spokesperson for West Virginia. Like many, Dvon left West Virginia when she turned 18 to join the military. She went on to get her Masters Degree and finally ended up in Jackson, Tennesse working for the city. She had a well paying job, a beautiful house and many friends. Yet, she decided to come back to West Virginia to try and make a difference. My wife was coming out of her first year as a Panthers Cheerleader in the NFL. I was loving my job as a builder. Still, something was missing. We had our second child. Visits home to WV were short and our children really missed their grandparents. They loved our tales of growing up in this state, going camping and of course Marshall Games. We just never had time. One trip back we saw potential and wanted to be part of that movement. We moved and never looked back. Now our children can experience for themselves, West Virginia Wild and Wonderful!

Almost Heaven West Virginia. My husband and I had everything so we thought living in NC. I achieved my dream of cheering in the NFL, he loved his job as a builder. Yet we were empty there. When we saw that glorious sign "Welcome to West Virgina Wild and Wonderful" our hearts filled with joy. We moved back inspiring friends to do the same. Young people of WV are too often led to believe this isn't the place to prosper. NOT TURE! Teaching dance to children and adults, I see West Virginians reclaiming their lives and state everyday. Come Home!
~ Melinda Starcher, Winfield, WV

A lifelong resident, you wont see this one leaving, but many have. He'll tell you theres nothing like these mountains, the people are real and hold deep substance and value in their lives. For Scott, theres no better place on earth and West Virginia holds endless treasures. Hes already promoted the state unofficially for 30 years with WV artists in the media, state parks and in any possible way to relay the magnificence of this state to draw people in. Scott even produced a CD called the Road Home about coming home to West Virginia. He may be your guy

She attended and graduated from Marshall University. Secondly, her past work experience includes working in the travel industry which has allowed her to come in contact with many native and non-native people. There's no place like home and our daughter, Katie, has found those words to be true. After graduating with a degree in Public Relations from WVU, Katie considered many employment opportunities. Eventually, she made the decision to keep West Virginia as her home and took steps to establish herself in Wheeling. Within 2 years of graduation, she applied for and received a first time home buyers loan (from our state) and bought a townhouse. She also adopted a kitten from a local shelter. She's an Event Coordinator at Oglebay Resort and does her part to keep WV wild and wonderful!

Hannah Saunders

Hannah Saunders is a very proud born and raised West Virginian. She is 9 years old and recently did an extra credit report on WV tourism. We took pictures of Hannah on a visit to Hawk's Nest and turned those pictures into a dvd with the song "Take me home country roads." She is very proud to live here. She has said she never wants to leave West Virginia. We think that since this state has left such a great impession on her as a 9 year old she would be a great spokesperson to bring people back.
~ Missi Saunders, Red House, WV
(Nominates: Hannah Saunders, daughter)

Growing up in the "mountains" of this beautiful state makes one realize how breathtaking and majestic WV is. Where else can one go to hunt, fish, hike, bike, ski, camp, enjoy natural wonders or visit various cultures without traveling thousands of miles? Growing up, I always wanted to leave, but I realized you can take the girl out of the mountains but you can't take the mountains out of the girl. My family and I love to visit other places, but our country roads always take us right back where we belong. West Virginia is and will always be home.

Coming from a WV heritage and knowing that WV is "home" is the reason that Lynn Hartz returned to WV. in 1971 after the death of her husband. "Almost Heaven, WV came out that year and brought me home " she smiled. She finished a doctorate, opened a business counseling women and has continued her work as a W.Va. woman by writing books stories and poetry on Appalachian life and "home." She has been featured in newspaper, magazine and TV articles as a spokeswoman for W.Va. women and as an example for hope for people returning home to WV.

I have known my fiancee for three years and it has been during this time that I have learned of her dedication and admiration for West Virginia. She is a beautiful woman who loves the Lord, loves family, and loves her state. She is proud of her roots and speaks frequently of the sincerity of the people, the beauty of the landscape and the depth of the culture. She herself briefly lived out of state for graduate studies but returned to serve the people of WV. She would tell those who have left the state "There s no place like home."
