CLARIFICATION: REDUCTION IN FEDERAL EXTENDED BENEFITS (EB) TO AFFECT LIMITED CLAIMANTS

Charleston, W.Va. -- Effective April 8, 2012, a limited number of West Virginians receiving federally funded extended unemployment benefits will see a reduction in the number of weeks they receive benefits.

This change applies only to those receiving federally funded extended benefits.  The change does not affect the 26 weeks of regular state funded benefits all eligible claimants are entitled to and 47 weeks of federally funded emergency unemployment compensation which is available to claimants who have exhausted their regular benefits.  The federally funded extended benefits are available to claimants who have exhausted their regular benefits and their emergency unemployment benefits and are still seeking employment.  With the reduction in the amount of weeks of federally funded extended benefits from 20 to 13 weeks, unemployed West Virginians could still potentially be eligible to receive up to 86 weeks of unemployment compensation benefits.

The reduction in benefits was triggered by a drop in the state’s unemployment rate. On March 16, 2012, West Virginia was notified that the state’s 3 month average seasonally adjusted total unemployment rate has dropped to under 8%, and the state is no longer in a high unemployment period. Federal law dictates that a reduction in extended benefits must be implemented within three weeks, during which time payments may continue.

Claimants residing outside of West Virginia may receive less than 13 weeks, as eligibility is contingent upon their resident state being triggered onto the Extended Benefits program as well.

WorkForce West Virginia is required by law to notify recipients of changes in their benefits.  We will mail affected claimants a notice, and we will also post information on our website, www.workforcewv.org.
