W.Va.’s Tree City USA Communities Hold Arbor Day Celebrations

Events scheduled throughout April and May

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – By the calendar, National Arbor Day is Friday, April 24, 2015; however, celebrations are planned across the state throughout April and May.

Urban Forester Bob Hannah said the dates of communities’ Arbor Day celebrations vary due to many factors, including weather conditions and planting seasons. “Whether you plant a tree on Arbor Day or another day in April or May, the important part is that you plant a tree.”

Fifteen communities will receive Tree City USA awards this year. Part of being a Tree City USA community is to commit to making an Arbor Day proclamation and hold a tree-planting event.

Planned Arbor Day celebrations for Tree City USA communities include:

April 21: Hinton, Lewisburg and Ronceverte

April 23: Williamstown

April 24: Elkins, Summersville and Vienna

April 25: Harpers Ferry

April 28: Bluefield

April 30: The Town of Bath

May 1: Parkersburg

May 2: Shepherdstown

May 8: Follansbee

Huntington celebrated April 17. Morgantown and West Virginia State University, the state’s only Tree Campus USA, will celebrate Arbor Day in the fall.

The West Virginia Tree Farm Committee donated $2,000 to purchase trees for this year’s Arbor Day events.
