Tuesday Crew Day: Nathaniel Boggess

Where are you from, where are you located now, and what are your ties to WV?

I was born in Cabell County and lived for some time in Lincoln County. I graduated from Marshall University with a degree in Graphic Design. I still have a lot of family in WV.

What was your first job in film production and what was the experience like?

My first job was as a Production Assistant on an infomercial in Portland, Oregon. My responsibility was actually turning the “we are filming” light on and off when we would roll for about 12 hours. At the end of the day, I knew I wanted to keep working in the business and basically pursued it ever since.

What was your last job and what were you responsible for?

I’m a freelance props assistant on commercial photography shoots in Los Angeles. I’m basically in charge of picking up the props, keeping inventory of them, placing them on set, keeping them safe, and then returning them to inventory or wherever they belong after the shoot. Sometimes I drive huge trucks through LA, and it’s actually quite fun. When it’s good, it’s the best job in the world.

What advice would you give someone wanting to work in the film industry?

Honestly, it’s an insane business. Everything you’ve heard about is true, but not in the way you would think. Be up for anything and just ask for what you want until you get it.
