Tuesday Crew Day: Krista Montgomery

Where are you from, where are you located now, and what are your ties to WV?

I am originally from Tampa, Florida and now live in Wheeling. My parents moved to WV when I was a child. I have found working here to be a very positive experience!

What was your first job in film production and what was the experience like?

My first job in film production was with the WV State Penitentiary in Moundsville, WV. I created creatures, ghouls, and sets for film spots featuring the prison's haunted attraction, and for the attraction itself. The experience was nostalgic since my first childhood job was as a local actress for the prison's annual haunted attraction. It was almost as if I had come back to the very start of my career later in life. I felt like it was meant to happen! I loved every second of being on set. I had an uncanny feeling like this was where I was meant to be. It felt like home even though I was in a spooky penitentiary.

What was your last job and what were you responsible for?

My last job was as a Key FX/Mask Maker on the independent film, “Slasher Bashers,” which is a fun story about a gaggle of female monster hunters. I was responsible for special effects, including an HD-ready mask capable of being waterproof and able to hold up underwater. This was a new task for me, but I was excited to deliver. Creating the mask was a fun, intensive, and rewarding experience. It looked really cool on film!

What advice would you give someone wanting to work in the film industry?

Really stretch out of your comfort zone and invest in your network. Make new friends and mentors. Learn all you can. There is always more to learn. Stay humble and never stop educating yourself on new techniques and old techniques alike. Be aware of what is going on locally. Get involved with your state film office. Be excited to participate in both independent and big budget films – both are wonderful opportunities and you’ll meet amazing people in both environments. Never stop trying!
