Where are you from, where are you located now, and what are your ties to WV?

I lived in Hurricane, WV all my life until I was 18. After I graduated high school, I moved to Savannah, GA where I attended Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) to earn a BFA in Production Design. I only recently graduated college and moved back to Hurricane, where I reside for the time being.

What was your first job in film production and what was the experience like?

My first job in film production was on a student film at SCAD. The point of being a part of student filmmaking is to gain experience, with other students that are at the same level as you, in how film sets are supposed to work. What I gained most from student filmmaking is the realization that you really do have to work together in this industry, and I really like that about film.

What was your last job and what were you responsible for?

My most recent job was also at SCAD during my last couple quarters. I was chosen by the Chair of Production Design to be the set designer of the SCAD Mainstage Theatrical Production of a play entitled “Becky Shaw.” It was such a great and challenging experience because it was the first time I was calling all the shots. It was empowering and such a confidence booster to be in charge of a real production, while still in a learning environment. I think the production turned out really well – I was extremely proud of the end result. Images of this set design can be viewed at www.kelseypatrick.com.

What advice would you give someone wanting to work in the film industry?

While I am just starting out in the film industry, I’m still taking advice myself. But one piece of advice I can give is to make connections. I believe the connections you make along the way are just as important as your portfolio – you need them both. And of course: Don’t. Give. Up. You didn’t come this far to only come this far.
