Tuesday Crew Day: Devon Nuckles

Where are you from, where are you located now, and what are your ties to WV?

Originally, I am from Ripley. I moved to Charleston in 2005 and then to Huntington this past year. I hope to move back to Charleston again soon.

What was your first job in film production and what was the experience like?

My first job was as a production assistant for Image Associates. I had just graduated from West Virginia State University, and I was very unsure of myself. Working that shoot had a profound impact because I learned so much from the hands-on experience that I could never learn in a classroom. It taught me not only what a production assistant’s duties are, but also confirmed that I joined this industry for the right reasons, no matter how long the hours may be.

What was your last job and what were you responsible for?

My last job was as a camera operator for Trifecta Productions in Huntington. I’m very proud of the work I did with them. To be able to share a story or an idea visually, and in a compelling way, is the sole reason why I wanted to get into this industry.

What advice would you give someone wanting to work in the film industry?

The truth is that this line of work will not make you rich or famous. There have been times that I had to take retail jobs so I could pay the bills. I know first-hand how challenging and scary trying to make it can be. Yet, keep at it if this is what you really want. Remember, nothing worth doing is ever easy.
