State Film Office to Host Workforce Training Workshop April 9-10

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Film Office will host a two-day workforce training workshop April 9-10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Marshall University’s Smith Communications Building, Room 106, Third Avenue, Huntington, W.Va. This hands-on workshop will introduce participants to the grip and electric departments and will be led by film industry veteran Dan Allers of the Atlanta-based company Film Industry Training Seminars LLC (F.I.T.S.). A few highlights of the workshop include the first day in the grip or electric department; what happens within each department; handling prep, shoot, and wrap; key pieces of equipment; non-electrical lighting and shading; demos of a dolly, jibs, and cranes; working with cars; and paperwork and safety.

“Some of the most often-requested crew positions we receive from companies filming in the state are for those in the grip and electric departments,” said Lisa Wells, Industry Relations Coordinator for the West Virginia Film Office. “Put simply, a grip sets up equipment to manipulate the sun, to ‘shape’ the lighting, and support the needs of the camera department. An electrician, or gaffer, is responsible for the lighting and color temperatures and power distribution.”

“Since May 2013, the Film Office has trained more than 260 people in several different skill sets through its workforce training initiatives, which are an essential factor in the continued growth and sustainability of the state’s film industry,” said Pam Haynes, Director of the West Virginia Film Office. “The Film Office is helping to diversify the state’s economy by providing workforce training opportunities to a wide range of skilled laborers who have an interest in working in the film industry. By learning new skill sets, these residents are increasing their opportunities to be hired on myriad productions filming in the state.”

F.I.T.S. is widely recognized as one of the top traveling training programs in the nation for teaching skill sets associated with film industry-related work. Dan Allers, the instructor for the workshop, is a Grip and Electric professional, having worked on hundreds of television shows, commercials, feature films, and live events. His credits include “Antiques Road Show,” “Breakaway,” “Not This Part of the World,” and “Mark of the Veil.”

Registration is required for the workshop and is available on a sliding scale. Due to the limited number of seats available, seating will be reserved only upon receipt of the registration fee. If you are not a current member of the Film Office’s online Crew and Vendor Directory, register by March 18 and pay $80. After March 18, the cost will be $95. Current members of the Film Office’s online Crew and Vendor Directory pay $60. Current high school and college students can take advantage of the workshop for $40.
