Public tour at Kumbrabow State Forest scheduled for Oct. 27

BECKLEY, W.Va. - The West Virginia Division of Forestry (DOF) will conduct a public tour at Kumbrabow State Forest Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012. This is an informational tour for the public to learn about plans for a proposed timber management project prescribed to provide young forest habitat good for grouse, woodcock and songbirds such as the golden-winged warbler.

This proposed project also could create and improve habitat for the West Virginia northern flying squirrel by releasing understory red spruce. The area is located west of the Piney Ridge Fire Trail and north of Turkeybone Road. It drains into Morgan Camp Run to the east and into a tributary of the Left Fork of the Buckhannon River to the west. This is the opportunity for the public to learn about the project in order to provide written input.

The tour begins at 11 a.m. Participants should gather at the Star Bridge across from the coal cleaning plant and bring substantial footwear, clothing appropriate for the weather, snacks and water. The tour will involve a one half to one mile hike on uneven ground in the woods with no trails. Some old roads are involved, and there are some hills along the tour path.

For more information about the tour, contact State Lands Manager Barbara Breshock at 304-256-6775 or 304-932-7105 or via email at Barbara.A.Breshock@wv.gov. For transportation purposes, please notify Breshock no later than noon on Thursday, Oct. 25, of your intent to participate in the tour.
