Public Invited to See New Observation Deck and Picnic Shelter at Kumbrabow State Forest

PICKENS, W.Va. - The West Virginia Division of Forestry (DOF) invites the public to Kumbrabow State Forest on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, to see a new observation deck and a new picnic shelter the agency built at the top of Rich Mountain. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon.

The picnic shelter and observation deck are near the confluence of Potato Hole Trail and Meat Box Run Trail. The gate to Rich Mountain Fire Trail will be open that day so visitors can drive to an area near the site and walk to the event. Visitors also have the option to hike all the way into the site.

Light refreshments will be served, so the public is asked to RSVP by noon on Thursday, Sept. 19 by contacting DOF Management Forester Travis Miller at 304-545-9015 or Travis.M.Miller@wv.gov.

Miller was working on a timber management plan for the area when he came up with the idea for the observation deck.

“The views from Rich Mountain are spectacular and it is the perfect place for an observation tower,” Miller said. “Right now this is a destination hike. In the future, I’d like to see closer public access that will allow visitors to drive nearer to the site to make it accessible to more people.” Miller is working with Division of Natural Resources (DNR) staff on this increased access, and thanked DNR Wildlife Resources Section and DNR Parks Section employees for providing assistance with labor, tools and equipment. Funding for the project came from the sale of timber on the project area.

Kumbrabow State Forest is composed of nearly 9,500 acres in Randolph County. The land for the forest was acquired in 1934, and the forest derives its unusual name from the three prominent families that were instrumental in the purchase of the land: KUMp-BRAdy-BOWers.
