Inwood Area Gets New Fire Forester

INWOOD, W.Va. – West Virginia Division of Forestry (WVDOF) officials recently announced the hiring of a new fire forester for the Inwood project area. Starting in January of this year, Tyler Williamson became the newest member of the WVDOF Region 1 forestry family. He will be responsible for all wild land fire management activities in the geographic area consisting of Morgan, Berkeley and Jefferson counties.

“We feel fortunate to have found such a well-qualified candidate in Tyler,” said Regional Fire Specialist Rodger Ozburn. Ozburn stated that one of Tyler’s priorities in the coming months will be to visit local emergency operations personnel and establish solid working relationships with volunteer fire departments and other forestry cooperators.

Tyler comes to the WVDOF after 13 years with the United States Forest Service. He started with the Forest Service on the Augusta Hotshots when the crew was formed in the spring of 2001. The crew was based in Augusta Springs, Va., (near Staunton) but traveled extensively throughout the United States, usually assigned to large fires in remote areas or areas with especially rugged terrain. After his experience on the Hotshots, Tyler became a timber forester and worked in southwest Virginia and western Arkansas, helping to prepare timber sales on national forestland. Most recently, Tyler was the timber program manager on the Clinch Ranger District of the Jefferson National Forest in Wise County, Va.

Tyler is originally from Fairfax, Va., and graduated from Fairfax High School. In 1994, Tyler graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Forest Resource Management. He worked for a number of years with consulting foresters in Florida and Virginia before beginning his government service. He, his wife Jennifer and their two children recently moved back to the area after more than a decade away.
