Heavy snowfall provides optimal skiing conditions in W.Va.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia’s ski resorts are reaping the benefits of this past weekend’s snowstorm, industry officials said. The storm, which dumped well over a foot of snow on much of the state, comes as an early present to skiers.
The snowstorm has created excellent slope conditions at all of the state’s ski resorts, so holiday visitors will be experiencing a white Christmas in the mountains of West Virginia, said Terry Pfeiffer, president of the West Virginia Ski Areas Association.
While power outages and road closings were reported in some parts of the state, roads and highways near the ski resorts have been cleared and are navigable. For updates on road conditions, call 1-877-WVA-ROAD or visit www.transportation.wv.gov.
The Mountain State’s five ski resorts – Canaan Valley, Oglebay, Snowshoe Mountain, Timberline and Winterplace – provide unmatched fun for beginner and expert downhill skiers and snowboarders. Several of these locales also offer snow tubing and sled runs, a treat for the whole family.
In addition, Nordic lovers will find plenty of opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at White Grass Touring in Tucker County and Elk River Touring Center in Pocahontas County.
The ski season typically extends into April and pumps more than $250 million into West Virginia’s economy, said state Tourism Commissioner Betty Carver.
West Virginia, with its beautiful scenery and mountainous terrain, is the perfect getaway for winter sports lovers, Carver said. Skiers can spend the day playing on the slopes and then retreat indoors to enjoy a fine meal by a roaring fire.
