Forestry Day at the Legislature is Tuesday, Feb. 11

Celebration part of A.B. Brooks Forestry Symposium

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Tuesday, Feb. 11 is Agriculture and Forestry Day at the West Virginia State Legislature. Representatives from state and federal agencies and West Virginia’s forestry and agriculture industries will staff displays at the Capitol from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday’s Agriculture and Forestry Day at the Legislature is the opening day of the annual A.B. Brooks Forestry Symposium that runs through Wednesday, Feb. 12.
            
Also Tuesday, Governor Earl Ray Tomblin will recognize 5-Year Loggers of Excellence with a proclamation acknowledging their full compliance with the state’s water quality laws. Forestry officials named 22 companies as 5-Year Loggers of Excellence for five consecutive years’ work in full compliance with the West Virginia Logging Sediment Control Act. Another 165 companies earned 2013 Logger of Excellence status for completing a year’s work in full compliance with the West Virginia Logging Sediment Control Act. All Loggers of Excellence will be acknowledged during a luncheon Wednesday, the second day of the A.B. Brooks Forestry Symposium.

The annual legislative reception is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Charleston Marriott. Wednesday’s events include a breakfast program, presentations by State Forester Randy Dye and other forestry leaders and a lunch program. All of Wednesday’s events will be held at the Charleston Marriott.

The symposium was created in 1986 in honor of Alonzo Beecher Brooks, West Virginia’s first forester.
