Federally Funded Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) Expires December 29

Charleston, W.Va. – Legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama on February 22, 2012 extended the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Program through December 2012.   WorkForce West Virginia was informed by the United States Department of Labor that the last payable week for federally funded Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) will be the week ending December 29, 2012.

This change applies to all federally funded EUC benefits.  Even if there is a remaining benefit balance, no further EUC benefits can be paid after the week ending December 29, 2012.  Prior to the December 29, 2012 expiration date, the EUC program was providing up to 37 weeks of benefits in addition to the regular state benefits.  Even with this expiration of EUC benefits, unemployed West Virginians will still be potentially eligible to receive up to 26 weeks of regular state unemployment compensation benefits.

WorkForce West Virginia is required by law to notify recipients of changes in their benefits.  We will mail affected claimants a notice of expiration, as well as post this information on our website at www.workforcewv.org.   If Congress acts at any time to extend or otherwise change federal benefits, WorkForce West Virginia will mail claimants a notice of potential additional entitlement.

WorkForce West Virginia encourages affected claimants to use the agency’s job services to find employment.  The One Stop centers offer reemployment services, including work-readiness assessments, WorkKeys certification, and job placement.  More information is available online at www.workforcewv.org, which offers the largest available website of West Virginia’s job openings and labor market information. Claimants with urgent needs will be referred to our partner agencies such as the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
