West Virginia - Open for Business!

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today released the latest “Open for Business” report documenting the state’s economic progress. The December 2011 report highlights projects and related announcements from businesses both large and small that will assist with the creation of new jobs and the preservation of existing jobs.

Ceremony marks construction milestone on FBI Biometrics Technology Center
The FBI hosted a “topping off” ceremony in November to celebrate the placement of the final steel beam in the new Biometrics Technology Center in Clarksburg. The new center on the campus of the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services campus is expected to completed and operational by 2014. Officials estimate that the facility will create about 1,200 new FBI jobs and 160 Department of Defense positions.

Eastern Hardwoods opens lumber business in Randolph County
Eastern Hardwoods has started operations in the location of the former Coastal Lumber in Dailey. The company purchased the land, property and equipment of Coastal Lumber. Eastern Hardwoods reports it has rehired many of the former firm’s employees. According to Eastern Hardwood’s website, the company has facilities in Pennsylvania, North Carolina and West Virginia. West Virginia Development Office and WorkForce West Virginia have worked in conjunction with the company to recruit and train Eastern Hardwoods employees.

Charleston Area Alliance to lead business mission to Europe
The Charleston Area Alliance is heading to Eastern Europe for its annual business mission and cultural tour. The May 2012 trip will include visits to Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic. Interested businesses should contact the Alliance for assistance in arranging meetings with business and governmental leaders. National Travel will organize travel plans for the excursion. West Virginia law firms listed among “Best” by U.S. News
More than 80 West Virginia law firms are named on the list of “Best Law Firms,” compiled by U.S. News and Best Lawyers, the leading survey of lawyers worldwide. The rankings are featured in the U.S. News November 2011 issue and online. The U.S. News – Best Lawyers® “Best Law Firms” rankings are based on an evaluation process that includes client and lawyer evaluations, peer review from leading attorneys in their field and information provided by law firms as part of the formal submission process.

Also, Jackson Kelly was named Best Law Firm of the Year in Mining Law. In each of the 75 practice areas ranked nationally, one law firm received the “Law Firm of the Year” designation. This is the first year that “Best Law Firms” has selected firms to receive this honor. Founded in Charleston, Jackson Kelly has offices in several states.

Marion County science tech firm to work with data from next generation weather satellite
When trillions of bytes of climate data stream from an advanced new National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather satellite back to earth, Global Science & Technology in Fairmont will be among the companies working with the information. The advanced weather satellite National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System Preparatory Project is designed to collect highly detailed data to improve short-term weather forecasts and long-term understanding of climate change. The data will end up in a massive electronic library that about 50 software developers, engineers and others are working on in Fairmont. The program supports the mission of NOAA’s satellite service to archive and disseminate environmental data. The new satellite is the first of a series that will replace an aging fleet and continue to provide the scientific community with critical data for weather forecasting and climate science.

Randolph County’s American Mountain Theater to air on nationwide cable TV
Effective January 2012, American Mountain Theater will provide weekly 30-minute shows to RFD-TV, a cable TV network with national reach. Located in the Historic Rail Yard in downtown Elkins, American Mountain Theater’s variety shows feature a mix of comedy and country, pop and patriotic music. In 2010, the West Virginia Division of Tourism presented American Mountain Theater with the Mountain State Award, which recognizes “the facility that stands above the rest in excellence in programming, distinctiveness, marketing efforts and economic impact.”

Greenbrier Executive Chef named Bocuse d’Or USA finalist
Richard Rosendale, CMC, The Greenbrier’s Executive Chef, is one of four finalists for the prestigious Bocuse d’Or USA National Competition. On Jan. 28-29, 2012, the four will vie for the chance to represent America at the 2013 Bocuse d’Or World Cuisine Contest, the most challenging international culinary competition. Rosendale’s previous achievements include the American Culinary Federation (ACF) presentation of the Presidential Medallion for his contributions to the Culinary Arts, the 2005 ACF Chef of the Year award and multiple appearances on Food Network specials. Also a certified professional ice carver, Rosendale has carved pieces ranging from one to 50 blocks.

WVDO participates in two trade events in November to promote state industries
The West Virginia Development Office (WVDO) staff did double duty in November by participating in two congruent trade shows: the Fab Tech metal fabricating event in Chicago and the DUG East trade show in Pittsburgh. An office marketing team covered each show. The relatively new DUG East show focuses on unconventional oil and gas professionals in the Marcellus region. WVDO was a Gold Sponsor the show. At the Fab Tech show, WVDO introduced its new 20 x 20-foot booth, which features space for private meetings, flat screens presenting comments from top executives doing business in West Virginia and an interactive touch screen where visitors can bring up information on business costs, available sites and other facts.

West Virginia Commerce wins awards for communications work
The winners of the 2011 public relations awards were recently announced by the East Central District of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). Groups from Michigan, Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Ohio competed for the honors recognizing outstanding achievement. The West Virginia Department of Commerce won more awards than any other group in the competition and was the only winner from the state. The awards were received for:

  • Search Engine Marketing and Landing Pages – Diamond Award
  • Genuine West Virginia Reunions Campaign – Diamond Award
  • West Virginia Small Business Development Center Identity System – Diamond Award
  • Governor’s Guaranteed Workforce Annual Report – Award of Merit
  • Business at the Speed of Life DVD – Award of Merit

The Business at the Speed of Life 30-second ad also earned a gold place finish during the 2011 MarCom Awards, one the largest competitions in the creative industry. The ad was first showcased on the CBS and Golf Channel networks during coverage of the second PGA TOUR’s Greenbrier Classic and now airs on CNN’s Airport Network between now and New Year’s week.
