March 4, 1861:

Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as the sixteenth president.  Lincoln admitted West Virginia to the Union as the thirty-fifth state.  A statue of Lincoln called “Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight” can be seen at the West Virginia Capital Complex.
