West Virginia Department of Commerce Multifest

For more than 20 years, Multifest has celebrated the state’s diversity through art, music, education, cultural programs and cuisine. “Our target audience includes anyone and everyone at any age or economic status,” said Executive Director Debbie Starks. “We want to educate and expose our citizens to the various cultures that encompass our state, and build on the tolerance that directs our people to a better relationship for the future.”

The three-day event, which takes place the first full weekend of August on the grounds of the state capitol, draws approximately 30,000 people each day. Friday evening’s events cater to a young audience with hip hop and rap acts. Saturday afternoon includes a variety of cultural entertainment with everything from Latin and jazz music to Italian heritage presentations and Eastern Indian dancers. Local R&B bands take the stage on Saturday night and warm up the audience for a performance by a nationally known act. Gospel music fills the air on Sunday afternoon before a jazz performance by local favorite Bob Thompson. The festival closes out Sunday evening with a concert by another nationally known band or performer.

Multifest is a free, family-oriented, ADA accessible and alcohol-free event. This year’s festival is scheduled for Aug. 6-8, 2010.
