and snowmaking capability provide a day-and-night, three-month skiing and snowboarding recreation opportunity for downhill skiers. A triple chair lift allows access to an 815-foot slope with a 168-foot vertical drop. The lift replaces rope pulls that were used in the 1960s, and the new snowmaking equipment adds to natural snow accumulations.

For beginners, friendly and knowledgeable instructors are available to help you learn to ski or board.

“We do have children’s clinics in the morning on Saturdays for an hour for both ski and snowboard, and have started a clinic on Thursday nights for adult beginners,” said Rico Coville, director of skiing and golf at Oglebay Park. “Both of these clinics have helped beginners learn how to ski and snowboard in a safe and relaxing environment.”

Options include instruction for all ages with equipment rental and lift ticket. Reservations are requested and can be made by calling 304-243-4049 to reserve a spot. More information is available at ski.oglebay-resort.com.

While in the Wheeling area, it’s a good idea to stop by Cabela's, the world's foremost outfitter of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear. Cabela’s opened a 175,000-square-foot mega-store and wildlife museum in 2004, located just off I-70. In addition to offering quality outdoor merchandise, the showroom is an educational and entertainment attraction, featuring a décor of museum-quality animal displays, huge aquariums and trophy animals interacting in realistic re-creations of their natural habitats. This is a great place to get ideas and prepare for your next outdoor adventure.

White Grass Cross Country Skiing

Cross country skiing and snowshoeing can be just as much fun and challenging as downhill skiing. If you’re a winter enthusiast and looking for something on the level, this may be for you. Some of the best cross country skiing in the eastern United States can be found in Tucker County, where the White Grass Ski Touring Center is located. It features 31 miles of curvy, exciting trails with up to 160 inches of annual snowfall often blowing in from the Great Lakes and Canada.

“We offer an easy, groomed and spectacular setting to learn cross country skiing or snowshoeing,” said White Grass owner Chip Chase. “Our terrain ranges from easy streamside flats to challenging hills along ridge tops. We have the latest new rental gear, and eager, friendly instructors offer short, brief instruction as well as full-day clinics and an array of special events designed to help people learn to appreciate and love winter.”

“We’ve been here since 1979 and take pride in our wholesome natural foods café, laid-back atmosphere, and our comfortable day lodge, as well as the cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snow skating and other winter outdoors activities our customers expect,” said Chase. “We also welcome first timers, who often feel our miles of groomed trails are maintained with them in mind.”

White Grass provides beginners with classes for the basics of cross country, telemark (xc downhill with grace) and snow skating for individuals or groups without reservations. All necessary equipment is available for rental or purchase, and some people visit just to eat at the café.
