Rewards for Wild Turkey Poaching Information
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – With the start of the 2010 spring gobbler season approaching, the West Virginia State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) will pay $200 cash rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons who illegally kill or possess a wild turkey. “This cooperative effort between the NWTF and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is designed to curtail illegal activities associated with the state’s wild turkey resource,” said Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the Division of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife Resources Section.

As most trout anglers know, many waters that should have been stocked in February could not be stocked. Continuous snowfall and poor road conditions caused many scheduled stockings to be canceled.

West Virginia’s state parks anticipate the arrival of the Easter Bunny over Easter Weekend
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Six West Virginia State Parks areas have Easter activities planned, with many including an Easter egg hunt for children on Saturday, April 3. An egg hunt at North Bend State Park is Sunday, April 4. Most activities are free or have a minimal fee to cover some costs.

Fifth Annual West Virginia Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament March 27 at the Charleston Civic Center
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources will host its fifth annual West Virginia Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center on Saturday, March 27, 2010, according to DNR Director Frank Jezioro. This year’s tournament should be the single largest indoor youth archery tournament in the history of the state with 540 students participating, representing 41 West Virginia schools.

Deer Donation Totals for the Hunters Helping the Hungry Program

West Virginia’s Most Important Bat Cave Has White-Nose Syndrome
Biologists from the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service report that white-nose syndrome (WNS) has been confirmed in a bat in Hellhole, Pendleton County, West Virginia, by the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study in Athens, Ga. If the effects of WNS on the bats in Hellhole are similar to those seen elsewhere, biologists expect that WNS will devastate the bat population in this cave, including endangered species.

Spring Vacations at W.Va. State Park Cabins Offer Reduced Rates by Booking in Advance
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Superintendents at 11 West Virginia state parks and forests with cabins are planning ahead. They believe families and friends will be looking for an affordable spring getaway or early vacation after the heavy snow and unpredictable weather retreats. Participating parks have put on the “getaway fun” hats and decided to step up the savings further by knocking off an additional $100 on some weekly rental times, but to get this rate reduction, reservations must be made by February 28, 2010.

Rare Civil War Artifacts at Blennerhassett Museum Through Feb. 28
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. - Civil War history comes alive at Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History through a special traveling exhibit from the Teacher’s Discovery program of Auburn, Michigan. Civil War artifacts from private collectors and from the Blennerhassett Museum’s collection will also be featured throughout this exhibit. The exhibit, open through Feb. 28, is part the state park’s winter events schedule.
