CertainTeed Gypsum West Virginia, Inc., located in Proctor, W.Va., was conceived as a “High Commitment, High Empowerment” organization, engaging in a world-class manufacturing environment.

Structured as a self-directed workforce, employees function in a team environment in all aspects of the operation. While a conventional manufacturing environment is built around management and laborers, CertainTeed’s workforce is self-managing, and has input and responsibility in virtually every aspect of the business from daily production to budgeting decisions and team performance. The typical management structure is replaced with a resource team that, as needed, gives guidance and advice to operate and run the manufacturing business. As such, employees are developed in areas of team performance and leadership, as well as technical and job-related skills. Continuous education and training opportunities allow for a skill-based pay scale. All team members are afforded the opportunity to learn and perform in virtually all areas of the production process and are rewarded through tiered-pay incentives.

Certaineed Facility Aerial ShotAs a new business entering West Virginia, CertainTeed has created opportunities for new employees to develop and learn multiple skills to increase their personal compensation and function as a highly-effi cient workforce. The Governor’s Guaranteed Work Force Program played an integral part in CertainTeed’s ability to provide an intense level of training and education to its employees. Through New Business Development Awards, CertainTeed utilized a nine-step hiring assessment system to screen 3,000 applications in order to fi ll 67 positions on the technician teams. An intense program of skills assessment was utilized through West Virginia Northern Community College. Following the fi nal team selection, team building and leadership programs were introduced to enforce the workforce structure and to provide multi-dimensional skills. Through the Governor’s Guaranteed Work Force Program, more than $170,000 was contributed to this extensive and on-going education and training environment in 2007.

“Workforce development plays a key role in establishing a World Class Manufacturing business,” according to Amity Fankhauser, the fi nancial analyst of CertainTeed’s West Virginia location. “The funds awarded through the Governor’s Guaranteed Work Force Program have allowed CertainTeed to adopt a very aggressive training regimen that will benefi t the company and the individual employees.”
