Large-scale production of DNA sequences

Vandalia ResearchBiotechnology firm Vandalia Research specializes in the large-scale production of DNA sequences.

A spin-off from Marshall University research, Vandalia Research is the first company to successfully scale-up the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from an analytical tool to a viable large-scale manufacturing process, enabling DNA sequences to be made more efficiently and cost-effectively.

The Huntington-based biotech firm created Triathlon™, a system to enable the mass production of specific, high-quality DNA sequences with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a thermo-chemical reaction that replicates DNA outside of a cell.

“DNA vaccines have a lot of potential advantages, especially in manufacturing, but they are mainly based on plasmid DNA, which is propagated in bacteria,” said Derek Gregg, vice president of business development. “Therefore, removing the bacteria remnants is important.”

PCR can amplify the DNA, but generating large quantities typically involves too much time and too many heating and cooling steps. Vandalia’s Triathlon™ scales DNA sequence production from the bench to commercialization. The Triathlon’s continuous method for heating and cooling the PCR reagents facilitates processing unlimited volume without having to pool the products from multiple small tubes. The result is reduced labor, decreased turnaround time, and, most critically, a reduction in the number of opportunities for contamination.

Vandalia Research is now capable of providing milligram and gram quantities of custom PCR-amplified DNA for a variety of applications.
