Winter Fun
Are you an adrenaline junkie who loves the exhilaration of snowboarding or downhill skiing? Do you prefer the quiet solitude of cross-country skiing or snowshoeing through the woods? Thanks to its lofty elevation and rugged terrain, West Virginia reigns supreme in winter sports activities in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. The Mountain State offers one of the longest seasons in the region for downhill and cross-country skiers, snowboarders and snow tubing fans. Spend the day on the slopes, then later, as the sun sets over the mountains, kick back and relax with a great meal and a warm fireplace. Overnight accommodations range from rustic cabins to cozy lodges and luxurious resorts. Restaurant dining and other amenities are available as well.

Downhill Skiing
Whether you like double black-diamond slopes that seem impossibly steep or gently pitched bunny slopes for a more soothing ride, there’s a trail in West Virginia just for you. Trained instructors can help get you down the mountain like a pro. If you can’t get enough skiing during the day, all four major resorts – Snowshoe, Canaan Valley, Timberline and Winterplace – offer night skiing, too.

Snowboarding
While this extreme sport certainly takes some getting used to, it is no longer solely in the realm of daredevil teenagers. If tricks and stunts are your thing, Winterplace, Timberline, and Snowshoe all have terrain parks built with challenging obstacles galore.

Cross-Country Skiing
Heavy snows turn pastures and woodlands into endless trails for Nordic enthusiasts at Canaan Valley, Timberline and Snowshoe resorts. Snowshoeing and cross-country trails, lessons and equipment sales and rental are also available at Elk River Touring Center near Snowshoe and White Grass Ski Touring Center and Blackwater Outdoor Adventures in Canaan.

Snow Tubing
The slopes may not be as challenging, but the pure childlike glee you get snow tubing as rewarding. Headfirst, feet first or spinning in circles, it’s an activity the whole family can enjoy. Don’t worry about trudging back up the hill. Winterplace, Canaan Valley and Snowshoe have lifts just for tubers.

Cozy Cabins
Travelers in West Virginia will find a variety of cabins to rent, from gas-lit pioneer cabins to air-conditioned modern ones. Sit by the fire or soak in a hot tub as you enjoy a relaxing getaway near some of the state’s finest attractions and outdoor recreational opportunities. Search our regional cabin rental directory for more information.
